Description

188 years ago, from Cape Town - South Africa, John Hershel pointed his 18-inch telescope at the constellation Volans (Flying Fish ) and saw what appeared to be a double nebula. Later it was concluded that that double nebula is actually a galaxy, being registered in the NGC catalog as 2442 and 2443.
Located 50 million light years away from us, NGC 2442 , also known as the Meathook Galaxy, is 75,000 light-years wide and features two dusty spiral arms extending from a pronounced central bar that give it a hook-like appearance, hence its nickname. The galaxy’s distorted shape is most likely the result of a close encounter with a smaller, unseen galaxy.
The attached image was edited in Pixinsight, however the raw data I used was collected through the Telescope Live network.
